I don't know if you've ever taken a look at timesnapper, but it's the first thing that came to mind when I read your post. I can't say I've never tried it - quite the opposite. It's kind of obscure, but I had a need for it some time back when I was trying to track billable hours. It just really impressed me as being a simple idea extremely well executed. Their burning suite offers some really well thought out features with an extremely easy to use interface.
